Royal Court of Arms

One of the most striking features within the church is the 1664 plater Royal Arms on the
north wall, with its original seventeenth strap work, an acknowledgment of Cornish support for the Royalist cause in the Civil War.

There is a crowned helm with mantling spreading out to either side, and the initials CR with the date 1664.

Below the badge is a second Royal motto “DIEU ET MON DROIT”, translated to read “God and my right” presented in a strap work band, with the rose and thistle and a number of strap work plaques.

LIME PLASTER MODELLING

The Warleggan Royal Arms is a fine example of the lime plaster modelling that was such a
feature of buildings in Devon and Cornwall in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, both in churches and domestic interiors.

Stuart Arms

The Royal Arms is a large panel, roughly square in shape, presenting the Stuart Arms, the badge of arms itself surrounded by the Garter bearing the motto “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”, translated to read “shamed be whoever thinks evil of it” and flanked by the supporters, the lion and unicorn representing England and Scotland.
